Home Warranty & Insurance Repairs: What to Expect

At Reliance Home Comfort, we believe in straight talk. When a repair goes through a home warranty company or your homeowners insurance, a third party has to approve the work before we can start. That can mean a wait we don’t control. Here’s how the process works, what we do on our end, and how you can help keep things moving.

Home Warranty Repairs

Six-step home warranty claim process: the homeowner files a claim, the warranty company assigns Reliance Home Comfort, we schedule a visit and diagnose the problem, we submit the findings for approval, the warranty company orders the parts, and we return to complete the repair.
How a home warranty repair moves from claim to completed visit.
How does a home warranty repair work?

Reliance Home Comfort is an authorized service contractor for several home warranty companies. You start by filing a service request with your warranty company. They assign the job to a contractor in their network, and when that’s us, we contact you to schedule a visit. Our technician diagnoses the problem and sends the findings to your warranty company. The warranty company then decides what is covered and approves the repair before we can begin.

Why can’t you just fix it on the first visit?

Your warranty company, not Reliance, decides whether a repair is covered and how much they will pay. Until they give approval, we’re not authorized to do the work. If we start before then, the warranty company may refuse to pay, and the cost could fall to you.

How long does approval usually take?

Most approvals come back within three to seven days, though it depends on the warranty company and the repair. Simple repairs are often approved quickly, while major repairs or replacements can take longer, and some warranty companies send their own inspector first. Many warranty companies have a customer portal where you can track the status of your claim online. We’ll also let you know as soon as we hear back.

Do I pay Reliance anything at the visit?

No. Reliance Home Comfort never collects a service fee or trade call fee at your visit. If your plan includes one, it’s set by your warranty company and handled through them.

What if part of the repair isn’t covered?

Warranty plans often exclude certain costs, such as refrigerant, acid coil cleaning, code upgrades, permits, special equipment, or damage from lack of maintenance. These are called non-covered costs, and you can verify any of them with your warranty company. If you’d like a non-covered repair done the same day, you would be responsible for that charge, and we’ll give you a clear price before any work starts. We accept cash, check, Zelle, Cash App, and credit or debit cards.

Why is my repair waiting on parts?

Sometimes your warranty company authorizes us to buy the parts ourselves. More often, the warranty company orders the part, because they have national pricing and a national supply chain of manufacturers and distributors, while we depend on local suppliers. Most warranty companies also don’t allow generic replacement parts from sites like Amazon or eBay, so the correct part has to come through an approved source.

Can I work with Reliance without going through a warranty company?

Yes. If you’d rather skip the warranty process and pay directly, call us at (757) 402-6749 and we’ll schedule you like any other customer. We’re licensed to work with homeowners outside of any warranty network, and with customers who don’t have a warranty company at all. To use your warranty coverage, though, you’ll need to file the claim through your warranty company first.

Three-step non-warranty service process: the homeowner calls Reliance Home Comfort directly, we arrive and diagnose the issue and discuss pricing, and we complete the repair the same day once the customer approves.
Without a warranty claim, most repairs are handled in a single visit.

Insurance Claims

Does homeowners insurance cover my HVAC system?

Homeowners insurance usually covers damage from sudden events like lightning, storms, fire, fallen trees, or sometimes flooding. It usually doesn’t cover normal wear and tear or aging equipment. Your policy decides what’s covered, so check with your insurance company.

How does Reliance help with an insurance claim?

We work directly with adjusters and insurance companies. We inspect your system, document the damage with photos and notes, and provide a written estimate. Insurance companies have strict licensing requirements for the contractors they’ll work with, and Reliance meets all licensing and insurance requirements for every major insurance provider.

Who decides what insurance will pay?

Your insurance company and its adjuster decide. We don’t control their timeline or decisions, but we’ll give you accurate documentation to support your claim.

While You Wait

What can I do to stay comfortable in the meantime?

We don’t provide temporary heating or cooling equipment, but we’ll tell you what temporary measures you can take and which local suppliers are likely to have what you need. In extreme heat or cold, we’ll tell you if we see a safety risk and what your options are.

How will I know what’s happening with my repair?

Your warranty company is your best source for claim status. They have 24-hour customer service representatives whose job is to research your claim and keep it moving, and they hold your contract, so they can answer coverage questions we don’t have access to. We’ll reach out whenever we have something concrete: to schedule your appointment, when your parts arrive, or when we have an update to pass along. If you haven’t heard from your warranty company in five business days, call them and ask about your claim number. Following up yourself can move things along. You can also reach our office at (757) 402-6749, Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.

Why does Reliance accept warranty and insurance work?

Some larger companies avoid warranty and insurance work because the added approvals, paperwork, pricing restrictions, and payment delays can make it difficult to support their higher overhead. As a smaller company, our lower overhead allows us to deliver skilled, professional workmanship at a more efficient cost without lowering our standards.

More importantly, we believe how a repair is paid for should never determine how a customer is treated. Homeowners using a warranty or insurance claim deserve the same expertise, communication, respect, and quality workmanship as customers paying full retail price.

The payment process may be different. Our commitment to doing the job right is not.
